Safe Driving

Be Prepared

To prepare for the adventures ahead, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the essential safety information below.

Roads

All main roads in the Faroe Islands are paved, well-maintained, and comfortable to drive on.

However, you may encounter gravel roads during your journey. Please navigate these with extra caution, as loose stones can easily cause paint chips or damage the vehicle.

Many secondary roads and older tunnels are single-lane with passing bays. Always adjust your speed accordingly. Use these lay-bys to yield to oncoming traffic when required. they are NOT to be used for parking.

Speed Limits

The general speed limit is 50 km/h in cities and villages. Outside of these areas the maximum speed limit is 80 km/h.

Beware of Sheep

Please remain alert at all times for sheep near—or on—the road. Sheep often wander freely and can suddenly run out in front of moving vehicles.

If you happen to hit a sheep, please report the accident immediately to the Faroese Police (+298 351448). You will not be held financially liable or required to compensate the farmer. However, if the incident goes unreported, the farmer cannot claim reimbursement from their insurance. Report the accident, help the farmer.

Weather

Weather conditions in the Faroe Islands can change rapidly. Strong winds, heavy rain, and dense fog are possible at any time of year, so please adjust your driving to current conditions. We also recommend always packing waterproof clothing for your day trips. Check the local weather forecast here.
